Sandeep Madhusudan Patil, born on August 18, 1956, in Bombay, emerged from Shivaji Park with a fearless attitude and natural flair. Early Ranji seasons (1975–79) hinted at his explosive potential, but it was his 210 versus Saurashtra at Wankhede in January 1980 that announced his arrival: over 205 balls, he smashed seven sixes—including one clearing the stadium wall.His Test debut followed swiftly in early 1980, but it was his ODI debut late that year against Australia where he truly shone, scoring 64 and earning Man of the Match on debut. On India’s 1980–81 tour of Australia, he recovered from a concussion to deliver a breathtaking 174 in Adelaide—then the highest Test score by an Indian in Australia. Further centuries on tours to England and Sri Lanka confirmed his aggressive artistry at number six.Although his Test career waned after 1982, Patil remained a force in ODIs.
